Why you should learn Swimming
Swimming is one of the most beautiful sports in existence. Not only does it provide physical benefits, but mental benefits as well. Here are some reasons why you should learn how to swim:
1) Improve Balance and Reflexes: Learning to control your body in the water will help improve balance and reflexes on dry land. For example, when learning to walk or run, we often hear that we should imagine ourselves walking on a straight line. While this may be beneficial for walking on dry land, learning dynamic equilibrium in the pool can lead to better skills and coordination on dry land! We all know that swimming has great cardio-vascular benefits and improves muscle strength . Therefore, improving balance is an easy step after mastering swimming.
2) Learn to move efficiently: A common mistake we make when we first learn how to walk is that we lift our feet too high and expend unnecessary energy. How long would it take us to run a mile if we lifted our legs as high as possible every time we took a step? Not very long, right? Yet, most of us complain about running out of breath after just a couple minutes of swimming! When learning how to swim it is important not only to master proper technique but also become an efficient mover in the water. It’s all about using minimal energy for maximum output. A great benefit of improving your efficiency is that you will use less air and decrease your risk of getting quickly – leaving you more rested and ready to take on another lap.
3) Relaxation: Something that is unique about swimming is that it’s one of the few sports where you can completely let go and relax. When we’re holding our breath and focusing on maintaining our technique, we don’t have time to think about all the stress from work or school. This allows us to fully escape the outside world and immerse ourselves in an underwater paradise for a brief moment in time. Keep in mind that this does not mean you should neglect your form while swimming! But having the ability to be able to focus solely on your breathing and movement without worrying about anything else is a great skill that will transfer well into other parts of your life. Being able to control your mind and relax during a stressful situation is an invaluable skill that few people have.
4) Build Confidence: This is probably one of the most important reasons to learn how to swim! Swimming will give you huge amounts of confidence once you get past the initial learning curve and finally master this beautiful sport. You will not only gain self -confidence, but self-reliance as well. Being able to always be ready for any impromptu pool parties or Jacuzzi getaways without having to wait for someone else will build your reputation quickly. It’s also great motivation when we’re struggling with our training in other sports and simply need that extra boost of motivation and drive to perform better. One benefit I’ll add on here (that might be a little TMI) is that swimming can help improve your sex life. Yes – you read that correctly! Swimming helps tone the entire body, including the pelvic floor muscles which are essential for both men and women during intercourse.
So there you have it – four great reasons why you should start learning how to swim today! Swimming is a great sport for people of all ages and can provide physical, mental, and emotional benefits. It’s a great way to get in shape, improve your balance and reflexes, and relax your mind. Swimming is also a very confidence-building sport that can help improve your sex life! What are you waiting for? Get in the pool!
